DJ Fresh – Drive

“Decent enough dance track hitting many of the right notes, and giving a shout out to Belgium.”

Tom: We are in a bit of a dearth of good new music, but DJ Fresh is — usually — at least “half-decent”.

Tim: True, and true. This time?

Tim: Belgium?!

Tom: Takes a while to get there, doesn’t it? There’s a lot of promise in that verse, but it doesn’t seem to quite convert into a good chorus, or into anything that’d make that build worth it.

Tim: Well, there’s always the sense that yes, this could be a bit more so, but it does at least have a memorable melody to it – or it’s just been repeated so often in three and a half minutes that I’ve no option but to remember it.

Tom: I was about to click away about a minute in, but there was something about those processed vocals at the end of the first part of chorus that got me to stick around.

Tim: I think it sounds okay: decent enough dance track hitting many of the right notes, and giving a shout out to Belgium. Why wouldn’t you?

Tom: My opinion on DJ Fresh continues: it’s at least half-decent. And in a February with this little good music, I’ll take that.

Sigala feat. Imani and DJ Fresh – Say You Do

“A pretty damn good followup.”

Tom: Sigala. Not to be confused with Sigma. Previously produced an absolutely brilliant cover of the Jackson 5. This time: paired up with a singer called Imani and the needs-no-introduction DJ Fresh.

Tom: Well, it’s not quite the instant-recognition floor-filler that we’ve had before, but it’s a pretty damn good followup.

Tim: Yeah – it’s certainly got a lovely swaying side to side at my desk chorus to it, which I’m very keen on.

Tom: Same tropical-house style with percussion that’s clearly in DJ Fresh’s style over the top of it. It feels almost routine: but it’s a very, very good routine.

Tim: It is indeed – very enjoyable, and while it might not be quite as good as the debut, it’s more than enough to keep the brand going. BRING ON THE SUMMER, I say, just as snow begins to descend on most of the nation.

Tom: Put this in the middle of a DJ set, and no-one’s going to be unhappy.

DJ Fresh feat. Ella Eyre – Gravity

“A pretty damn good cake.”

Tom: DnB producer DJ Fresh has a couple of notable hits under his belt, but in my head he’s mostly noted for the ridiculous Dibby Dibby Sound. This time, he’s gone for what I can best describe as “euphoric vocals”.

Tim: Yep, “euphoric vocals” works for me.

Tom: So, I’ve previously established that I’m a sucker for Americana, road-trip music videos, but in this case I had this playing in another tab — I didn’t even notice that until half way through, and it was the icing on a pretty damn good cake.

Tim: Indeed – as the actual Ministry of Sound states below the video, “Big track, great video! Thumbs up all round ” and who are we to disagree wit the government?

Tom: Now, I’ll grant you that it’s a bit by-the-numbers: there’s nothing unconventional or surprising in here. But: those are excellent numbers to go by. One more chorus and it’d outstay its welcome — it doesn’t have much replay value — but at three minutes this is a properly good track that’d fit nicely in a DJ set.

Tim: It is, especially as you don’t get that many opportunities to dance to a pipe organ. Like it a lot.

DJ Fresh feat. Dizzee Rascal – The Power

That’s two very different songs jammed together.

Tom: DJ Fresh, purveyor of top-quality dance CHOONS. Dizzee Rascal, one of the most energetic live performers I’ve ever seen. Surely this can’t be anything other than spectacularly good?

Tom: Okay, that’s not the best start, but I’m sure it’ll pick up… huh. That’s… well. That’s two very different songs jammed together. One’s an 80s-inspired synth singalong, and the other’s a bassline-fuelled Dizzee rap track. And it keeps switching between the two.

Tim: Yes, it does, doesn’t it?

Tom: And I like it.

Tim: Ah, a difference of opinion.

Tom: Here’s the thing: I can’t explain why I like it. Maybe it’s just because these two are clearly so damned good; even when it seems a bit disjointed, the various parts are still so energetic and danceable that they just work anyway.

Tim: You think? Yes, they’re energetic and danceable, but whenever Mr Rascal’s doing his stuff, I’m thinking, “Hurry up, bring back the other bit,” but when they do bring back the other bit I think that Dizzee needs to come back or it’ll get annoying. And then he does come back, and I want him to go away again. Oh, I DON’T KNOW.
