Alesso feat. Nico & Vinz – I Wanna Know

“Why have we got a firefight in a standard love song?”

Tim: New one of Alesso, who’s recruited a multiple person act for vocal duties, which I’m not sure I can remember happening previously. Anyway, have a listen.

Tim: And I think the phrase du jour there is “Boy, that escalated quickly,” because I was sat calmly watching that and then BAM what on earth is going on why have we got a firefight in a standard love song?

Tom: I’d pretty much fallen asleep by then, to be honest. The fight scene at least woke me back up a bit.

Tim: Is this a metaphor for the actor and his feelings towards the other people she’s flirting with? Or is this meant to be a song that would fit as the soundtrack to this film? WHO KNOWS, but in any case it’s generally the music that matters, and here that’s a pleasant surprise.

Tom: Really? Because I waited 90 seconds for something to kick in, and then got something that sounds a bit like a GarageBand loop.

Tim: Oh, you want a GarageBand loop? Compare and contrast Umbrella with the vastly superior Symphonies. But in any case, at least it’s a good loop – Alesso more often produces dance music that’s a bit harsh and intense for my liking, but this is lovely to listen to. There is that pronunciation of “here”, though, which I think is the weirdest I’ve ever heard, but that aside, it’s all great.

Nico & Vinz – In Your Arms

“It’s pleasant, it might pop its head into the top 40, but I can’t see this being a Big Tune.”

Tim: I was entirely wrong when I predicted Am I Wrong wouldn’t be a hit in the UK, what with it ending up being one of the biggest tracks of the summer.

Tom: Heavens, I was actually right about that. I still think chart predictions are basically a lottery, though.

Tim: Probably, yes. But here’s their follow-up, actually a re-release of a track from four years ago, because they reckon it’s good.

Tim: Despite my previous failure, and your point that it’s a lottery, I will happily make another prediction: this will have no trouble at all being a hit.

Tom: And again, I’m going to disagree with you: it’s pleasant, it might pop its head into the top 40, but I can’t see this being a Big Tune.

Tim: It’s a great track, even if it does feel broken a bit by the second part of the middle eight. It’s a lovely part, especially if you’re watching the video.

Tom: The video’s just as pretentious and credit-filled, I see.

Tim: Well, it’s a bit of fun. It does at least show they put some effort into this release rather than just “shall we put that one out again?” “yeah”; that middle eight does create a fairly heavy disjoint in the track, though. Unless it’s just one of those bits they stick in a music video that isn’t in the main track, in which case: all great, no problems at all.

Nico & Vinz – Am I Wrong?

“I don’t see it being huge here.”

Tim: A pair of Norwegians, with a song that’s been out basically everywhere except the UK for a while now, and gone top 10 in all of Scandinavia, America and Germany, but has only just now been given a UK release date. Have a listen, why don’t you.

Tom: Oh heavens, it’s a music video with credits. Much as I like seeing music video directors get their due, it still seems pretentious.

Tim: I’m going to be honest: I don’t see it being huge here. I’m very willing to be proved wrong (and I may just be saying this based on only listening to Radio 1), but it doesn’t really strike me as the sort of thing that ‘we Brits’ would buy.

Tom: Hmm. Is that based on style, or based on it being decent? It’s not bad — although I’ll admit I did get bored half way through.

Tim: It’s a good enough track, and there’s not a lot to say against it, but at the moment British charts seem to favour more stuff that is fairly out and about and confident and, gah, I don’t know how to put it, but just something that this doesn’t have. Take this week, top 10 entries include Ella Henderson at 1 and Tiësto at 3, Little Mix’s power-pop Salute and that awful Wiggle song by Jason Derulo. This just doesn’t seem to have, I don’t know, it. I like it, but, well, personally? I wouldn’t buy it.

Tom: See, I think you’re wrong: I’m not guaranteeing it’ll actually hit the top 40, but I can see it up there. If Ed Bloody Sheeran can manage it, these guys can.

Tim: As a positive to finish on, though, a thing I found out whilst researching: Let It Go is still in the top 20, after 27 weeks. Wonderful.
