Say Lou Lou – Hard For A Man

“It never really peaked above “slog” for me.”

Tim: You were bored by the first track of Say Lou Lou’s that we featured, and only mildly enthused by the second – let’s see if this’ll push any buttons.

Tom: Well, it’s caused a reaction at least, but sadly it’s “well, that’s a racket”.

Tim: Oh.

Tom: I don’t think I ever recovered from that seemingly-discordant introduction.

Tim: See, I kind of agree there, because that and the first (and only) verse may be a bit of a slog, but it quickly picks up for that first pre-chorus, carries on and by my favourite moment, when the second chorus kicks in, well, it just keeps going.

Tom: I’ll grant you that by the final chorus, at the end of the middle eight, perked me up a bit, but it never really peaked above “slog” for me.

Tim: I wouldn’t mind a bit more variation in the lyrics – yes, love’s hard for a man like me, I GET THAT so can we move on please – but I can’t fault the production on here at all. Overall, very happy.

Say Lou Lou – Nothing But A Heartbeat

“Sweden’s most notable twins are back.”

Tim: Sweden’s most notable twins are back —

Tom: I’m racking my brains to find a counterexample for that, but I can’t think of one.

Tim: — and the last time we covered them you reported being bored throughout. See if this is any better.

Tom: It’s… yes, it’s better.

Tim: Because I think it’s a lovely track – beautiful sounding vocals, wonderfully dreamy instrumentation and enough variation throughout to keep it very interesting. I have a lot of time for this – how about you?

Tom: It’s good. I’m not sure it’s as good as it could be — that string section is kept remarkably quiet throughout, and that last chorus could stand being elevated one or two notches higher. But yes: it’s not boring me, and while that’s a low bar to clear, they’ve definitely cleared it.

Say Lou Lou – Everything We Touch

“You’re not bored for all of it?”

Tim: Say Lou Lou are a Sweedish pair who, somehow, we’ve never covered; not to worry, though, as we can make things right with this, by far their best number to date.

Tim: The press release’s two killer words are ‘quietly devastating’, and that’s a weird way to describe a song.

Tom: Yep. That’s the kind of language you use to describe an excellent novel or a terrible diagnosis.

Tim: On the other hand, I can ever so slightly see where they’re coming from, but not in a great way, because the only ‘quietly’ bit is the first verse which is basically quiet in the sense that I’m slightly bored.

Tom: That feeling holds with me through most of the track. You’re not bored for all of it?

Tim: Absolutely not – I reckon the rest of it is brilliant, and will take the devastating to be a good thing, because I suppose language changes and all that. The melody is great, the production is great, the vocals are great – this is a great track, really.

Tom: I’m just not feeling it: I can see what they’re aiming for, but it just seems to plod, and end in a really unsatisfying way. I can’t fault the vocals or the production — it’s just the track itself.

Tim: Suit yourself – I love it.
