Saturday Flashback: Fall Out Boy – Immortals

“A very very good chorus line.”

Tim: From last October, this by Fall Out Boy, which is entirely not ‘us’, but I’ve just seen Big Hero 6 and it’s BRILLIANT.

Tom: Isn’t it, though?

Tim: I mean to be honest I don’t have much to say about the song itself – it’s got a very very good chorus line, even if the lyrics don’t really make much sense, but the rest is a bit of a racket, and not really up there with Fall Out Boy’s best.

Tom: Whoa, really? Because this (along with Save Rock and Roll) is one of their stand-out tracks for me.

Tim: I don’t know – it’s certainly very good, but as far as rock tracks go I generally prefer something with a bit more melody; in Fall Out Boy’s case I’d have Sugar We’re Going Down, or maybe Dance, Dance – though that might be just remembering them from university when I would have put up with that. I will restate, though, that the chorus here is utterly brilliant.

HOWEVER, regardless of Fall Out Boy’s back catalogue, Big Hero 6 is absolutely wonderful, and everybody should see it, and it’s on Netflix and all the usual places so watch it because it’s very funny and lovely as well. Done.

Saturday Flashback: Fall Out Boy feat. Elton John – Save Rock and Roll

“Barnstormer.”

Tom: We’ve covered a couple of tracks from their latest album before, but not this one — it’s the title track, and it’s a barnstormer.

(There’s also the full music video here, with two warnings: one, that it’s part of a concept video, and two, that’s it’s rather splatter-gory.)

Tim: Hmm. You say spatter-heavy, I say typical episode of Hannibal or The Following. Though has Elton ever done a video where he doesn’t play the piano?

Tom: Some critics derided this track as ‘cheesy’, which is probably fair when compared to other tracks from a punkish-rock band like Fall Out Boy.

Tim: Yes, but every heavy band typically puts a couple of more radio-friendly tracks in each album – we’ve featured a couple before. Keeps them accessible to everyone; an excellent idea, I reckon.

Tom: I mean, that’s a glorious key change, and Elton John’s happily singing along with it — yep, it’s pretty cheesy. But you know what? It’s also pretty damn good.

Tim: It really is. And that video’s pretty special too.

Fall Out Boy – Alone Together

They’re nailing it.

Tom: Comeback album after a “hiatus”. Third single. Pretentious concept video. To repeat some shtick from yesterday: it’ll be awful, right?

Tom: NO. It’s a great song. Whatever genre they’re in now — alt-rock? emo? Who knows — they’re nailing it.

Tim: They really are, its great. Strange how there are some bands that I like even though if they were just a tiny little bit elsewhere musically I’d hate. My Chemical Romance is the same – emo-rock that’s got just the right small degree of pop to it that makes it work really well for me.

Tom: The album’s been well received — it made it to number 1 on the US album chart. Given the troubles they’ve had in the past (do consult Wikipedia), I’d say this is one of the most triumphant comebacks of recent years.

Tim: High praise indeed, but you may not be far off.
