Truls – Canyon

“Not quite enough excitement to make it work”

Tim: Wait for it, wait for it…

Tom: Taking their video cues from the Blair Witch Project, there.

Tim: Right, so there’s a lot of the waiting and not a lot of the it, at least in terms of duration, but when it does arrive, it’s well worth paying attention to.

Tom: Agreed: but I’m not sure about the rest of it.

Tim: Well I see this at several levels – the opening verse and the beginning of the middle eight, both a bit dull; the second verse, the pre-chorus and the end of the middle eight, all fairly decent; and then the chorus proper, which is just lovely. Builders are tricky ones to get right, what with having to cut a balance between peaking to soon and going way, way too slowly; this one just about falls on the right side of that fence for me, so I’ll have it.

Tom: Not quite for me: I’ll agree with you that the chorus is excellent, but I just don’t think the rest is. It doesn’t really build: it’s just a minute or so of dull interspersed with not quite enough excitement to make it work.

Tim: I’ll certainly have that final chorus, at any rate.

Truls – Tear Me Up

“I don’t have much of a problem this time.”

Tim: Dreamy synthpop, you say? Yes, why not.

Tim: And it’s quite nice. We’ve heard his falsetto vocals previously – you said you weren’t a fan, but I had no problem then and I still don’t.

Tom: Perhaps it seems to fit the track better, but I don’t have much of a problem this time.

Tim: It’s like yesterday’s track – nice and gentle, and working well with the backing such that we have a dance track where every part knows its place.

Tom: Unlike yesterday, I agree here: it does work well together.

Tim: Loud as necessary, quiet otherwise, and all around lovely. Album coming out within a few weeks, so keep a look out for that if you do in fact want to.

The sad truth is, though, nobody, but nobody, can do this like The Sound of Arrows can. Some can come close, as this does coming back from the middle eight, but none really make it. So, HELLO OSKAR AND STEFAN ARE YOU LISTENING PLEASE IT’S BEEN TWO YEARS NOW THANK YOU.

Truls – Out Of Yourself

I’m not sure they all mesh together as a whole.

Tim: New Norwegian pop here, and if you want your laptop to look somewhat sinister for three minutes, why not put this on full screen?

Tim: That was interesting, wasn’t it? I don’t have much to say about it, but I think it’s worth bringing to people’s attention because I really do rather like it.

Tom: There’s many good parts in that, although I’m not sure they all mesh together as a whole. The vocals could use being an octave or so lower, and perhaps, you know, actually sounding like words.

Tim: You think? Because there’s something about those high-pitched and almost unintelligible voice that works for me.

Tom: Each to their own, I suppose. The backing’s good, at least.

Tim: Indeed, and when you combine the vocals with that good backing track and a melody that sounds strangely optimistic, I like it a lot. Good stuff.
